Twice The Nightmare

I expected a busy morning, considering we had to double-check and cancel with the modeling agency that actually called us to make sure they’d heard correctly about Barton, which was an awkward conversation to have.

But I didn’t realize the morning would bring even more bad news.

I’d gotten a phone call after having breakfast. Geena was already on her way over and, in fact, so was TJ.

“Say what now?” I said into the phone. My reception wasn’t the best and I kept losing Geena halfway through her sentences.

“Hurricane. Hurricane Tanya. They just said on the news that it’s changed its path at the last minute and now it’s going to hit us full-on as a category two! And,” she said, her voice pitching considerably, “the east side of the eye wall is going to be directly over Nella. We’ve got to prepare.”

In the background I could hear TJ going on about Mother Nature being pissed off. She would say something like that.

I met up with the two of them at the supermarket, readying my buggy to get through the sea of people already flooding the place. Everyone and their mama was out shopping all at once.

So much for being prepared.

“Where’s Cinda and Frannie?” I asked. “Shouldn’t they ought to be stocking up, too?”

“Cinda’s down at the Macaroon Boutique hunkering everything down. She’s got a couple of those emergency generators. You know she can’t be having her refrigerators go down,” TJ said. “John’s at the house boarding up.”

“Frannie just called me from the salon, she’s doing the same. She’s got a couple of the guys from the sheriff’s department helping her,” Geena said, going through her purse for coupons. “I was hoping we wouldn’t have to worry about this darn storm. I just stocked up on my produce, and the last thing I want to deal with is some rotten cabbage stinking up the place. Spoilt food is the worst.”

Around us, people were fighting tooth and nail to get their hands on as many of the pantry items as they could. Toilet paper? That was a joke, too.

“Looks like we’re going to have to go out back and wipe our rear ends with some leaves,” TJ said with a sneer, shaking her head as she pushed her way past a man taking up too much of the aisle with his buggy. “Can’t anybody leave some for the rest of us? Greedy.”

The fact of the matter was that this store wasn’t prepped for the onslaught of people all at once. “I hate to say it, but we might have to go to Bonneau down to the Walmart if we want to find anything,” I said.

“I won’t go there. I’d rather deal with the leaves! It’s going to be twice the nightmare it is here,” TJ said as she snatched a box of doughnuts.

Geena shrugged. “She’s right.” Stopping in front of the oatmeal, she pulled out her coupon book, squinted at the fine print on it, and grabbed four boxes. “You can never be too prepared.
